Crown Application Process

Dental Crowns ravena ny

If you have a tooth that has been damaged or weakened or you have recently had a root canal, you might need to get a dental crown.

Dental crowns restore the function of a tooth structure that has been compromised. They are made to match your natural teeth, so they are a seamless way of repairing a tooth.

Let’s take a look at the application process of crowns at our Revena, NY dental office.

The Dental Crown Application Process

You can expect to make a couple trips to the office to complete the crown application process. The first step in the process is preparation of the damaged tooth. In order to fit the crown, your dentist will have to prepare the tooth by removing much of its outer portion.

Once the tooth has been prepared, an impression will be made of the tooth structure so a crown can be custom-made to fit.

While you wait the couple of weeks required for the lab to make the crown, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown so you can still chew. It is worth noting, however, that you might experience some sensitivity to cold and hot with the temporary crown. Because the temporary crown is not permanently attached, you should avoid eating sticky foods or anything that might cause the crown to pop off. It’s best to avoid chewing gum, as well.

You’ll go in for your second appointment once the permanent crown is ready. After your dentist places it over the tooth structure, it will be adjusted until you can bite down on it comfortably. Then it will be permanently cemented into place.

A crown looks very similar to a natural tooth, and caring for it is the same. Be sure to brush twice each day and floss once each day to help minimize the development of plaque on your teeth. Visit your dentist twice each year for examinations and cleanings.

To avoid damaging your crown, avoid chewing on hard foods—and do not chew on non-food items either, such as ice, pencils, or fingernails. This will protect the crown and ensure it lasts for many years to come
