Making Dental Care Simpler

What’s the difference between a bridge and a dental implant?

If you’re interested in tooth replacement in Glenmont, NY, bridges and dental implants are two of the options available. They both have their advantages, and which you choose would depend on your overall oral health, your preference, and your budget.

Most people are familiar with dental bridges because until recently, they were the only solution available to replace a single tooth. A bridge is a prosthetic that uses an artificial tooth to sit in the space left by the missing tooth. While bridges solve the aesthetic problem and restore some function, there are a couple of drawbacks.

First, our dentists need to anchor the bridge to the teeth on either side of the open space, which means we must alter their structure. Also, since a bridge sits on top of your gum, it doesn’t do anything to prevent gum recession or bone loss.

On the other hand, dental implants in Glenmont, NY are a standalone tooth replacement. A small titanium post is anchored in your jaw bone, and a prosthetic is attached to restore function. In the case of a single missing tooth, we would use a crown; if we replace several missing teeth, we will combine the implants with a bridge or denture.

With dental implants, we don’t need to alter healthy teeth as we do with bridges. The implant takes the place of the missing tooth root, so it helps keep the bone in your jaw strong and healthy.
